Anti-cytomegalovirus and anti-Epstein Barr virus antibodies in Cuban patients

Abstract

Introduction: Epstein-Barr virus infection is the most frequent cause of infectious mononucleosis. Cytomegalovirus is the second cause of mononucleosis syndrome and presents great morbidity and mortality in immunosuppressed patients, mainly in transplanted patients and in those with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Objective: To determine the seroprevalence of anti-cytomegalovirus and anti-Epstein-Barr antibodies in Cuban patients.

Materials and methods: The detection IgG and IgM antibodies against both viruses was done by Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay to infection, febrile syndrome, repeated adenopathies and others diagnosis patient´s samples that arrived to the Histocompatibility Department of the Institute of Hematology and Immunology from January 2017 to June 2020.

Results: 892 serum samples from patients from all over the country were studied. The seroprevalence of anti-cytomegalovirus IgG antibodies in the studied sample was 81.62% and 82.06% for anti-Epstein-Barr. The seroprevalence for both viruses below 20 years old age was high and increased with age. Primary infection with the viruses was detected mainly below 20 years age.

Conclusions: The seroprevalence of the infection of both viruses in the studied population agrees with what is reported in the literature.
