Abstract

Introduction: The immunosenescence that occurs in older adults makes them susceptible to infectious diseases. Biomodulina T® is a Cuban immunomodulator that helps to counter the deleterious effects of immunosenescence.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of Biomodulina T® in the prevention of infections, particularly respiratory, in older adults of a Mayabeque Nursing Home.

Methods: A longitudinal analytical observational study of cohort type was carried out in 40 adults over 60 years old belonging to the Nursing Home Mario Muñoz from Güines, Mayabeque, from January to June 2020.

Results: Male sex, white skin, smoking habit and malnutrition by default predominated, with a mean of 79 years. Mental, cardiovascular and rheumatic diseases were the most representative comorbidities. The incidence of infections in the group aged 80 years and over decreased by 59.7% after the application of Biomodulina T®. There is statistically significant evidence to suggest that the treatment induces marked improvement in the prevention of total and respiratory infections.

Conclusions: Treatment with Biomodulina T® decreased the incidence of infections, especially respiratory infections in the elderly in the study.
