Abstract

Introduction: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is currently the treatment of choice for various genetic and acquired diseases. They began at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology in 1985.

Objective: To evaluate the outcomes in pediatric patients who received hematopoietic transplantation.

Methods: An observational, quantitative, retrospective and descriptive study was carried out in 63 pediatric patients who received hematopoietic stem cell transplants at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology, from 1987 to June 2018.

Results: The mean age was 10.2 ± 4.9 years, and 63.5% were males. Acute lymphoid leukemia (33.3%) and acute non-lymphoid leukemia (31.7%) were the most frequent diseases. Allogeneic transplant was used in 63.5% and bone marrow in 47.6%. Among the main early complications were infections (36.5%) and late complications were chronic graft-versus-host disease in allogeneic transplants (32.5%). Mortality was 38.1%. Relapse (45.8%) was the main cause of death. The median overall and relapse-free survival time was 118 and 105 months, respectively.

Conclusions: In general, the results coincide with international reports; although studies should be done on different diseases, as well as types of transplants and their different variants.
