Effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting

Abstract

Introduction: Chemotherapy is one of conventional methods used in cancer treatment. Among its most common collateral effects are nausea and vomiting, with a high prevalence. Although there is a significant improvement controlling these symptoms using modern antiemetics, a wide range of patients are still affected. A remarkable method for chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting control is acupuncture: a traditional Chinese medicine millenarian technique.

Objective: To expose the use of acupuncture for treat chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting.

Methods: There was made a narrative type revision of up to date literature both in English and Spanish published in last five years.

Conclusion: There were obtained scientific pre-clinical and clinical evidence about effectiveness of acupuncture in chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, this data allowed us to conclude that the use acupuncture as alternative treatment can have a positive effect on cancer patients.
