Abstract

Introduction: Immunosenescence provides a favorable scenario for development of infections, autoimmunity and cancer; so having an immunophenotype by flow cytometry that allows the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of cellular immunity is of great importance to take decisions and treatment of the patients; which will result in improving quality of life.

Objective: To characterize the immunophenotype of activated T lymphocytes in older adults.

Methods: A cross-sectional study that included 30 older adults, aged between 60 and 99 years, from the “Alfredo Gómez Gendra” Nursing Home, in Havana, of any sex and skin color, was carried out. The determination of activated T lymphocyte subpopulations CD45+CD3+HLA-DR+CD25-, CD45+CD3+HLA-DR-CD25+ and CD45+CD3+HLA-DR+CD25+ from peripheral blood was performed by flow cytometry.

Results: Elderly people aged 80 years and older showed an increase in the absolute count of CD3+HLA-DR+CD25- T lymphocytes. Women showed lower percentages and absolute counts of the same T lymphocytes subset.

Conclusions: The immunophenotypic characterization by flow cytometry of activated T lymphocytes in the elderly allows us to clarify their involvement in aging of inflammatory origin, their relationship with chronic-degenerative diseases and implement specific and timely health interventions.
