Abstract

Introduction: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a threat to patients. It is estimated that one in every 20 patients admitted to a hospital may become infected simply by being hospitalized.

Objective: To determine the prevalence rate of HAIs at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology during the period from January to August 2023.

Method: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of all patients hospitalized at the institution for more than 72 hours (104 patients). Data were obtained from the records of the Medical Records Department and the center's Microbiology Laboratory.

Results: In eight months of work, a prevalence rate of 54.6% was observed; the most affected service was the Pediatrics Department, with 60.3%. The most frequently isolated microorganisms belong to the Enterobacteriaceae family and represent 56.04% of the total isolates. In Cuba, surveillance of healthcare-associated infections is ongoing.

Conclusion: During the period studied, the infection rate was very high, with a high incidence of microorganisms belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family, primarily transmitted via fecal-oral transmission. Implementing a healthcare intervention project would help reverse the situation in the institution.
