Abstract

Introduction: Primary gastric lymphomas are the most common type of extranodal lymphoma.

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with primary gastric lymphoma diagnosed at the institution.

Method: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study, carried out at the “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima” from Cienfuegos, in the period between January 1, 2014 and March 31, 2020. From the universe of patients with extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas, the 19 with histological diagnosis of primary gastric lymphoma were selected. The variables studied were age, sex, histological type, presence of Helicobacter pylori, symptoms, endoscopic findings, affected site, treatment variant and type of response achieved. The primary data was obtained from the medical records. To process the information, a database was created in the SPSS V21.0 program. Absolute and relative frequencies were used as summary measures.

Results: Male patients predominated (63.2%), between 51 and 70 years old and diagnosed in stage IV (42.1%). Mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue type lymphoma was the one with the highest incidence (52.6%). Chemotherapy was the most used treatment variant, as the only modality, combined with surgery, with the anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, or with both. There was an objective response in 89.4% (complete response: 78.9% and partial response: 10.5%).

Conclusions: Clinical characteristics of the patients studied coincide with previous report; it differs as a negative variable, that a considerable proportion are diagnosed in advanced stages of the disease.
