Spatial analysis of the incidence of acute lymphoid leukemia in children of Villa Clara, 2000-2019

Introduction. Knowledge of the origin of acute lymphoid leukemia is limited; information is needed to allow the correct search for the etiological factor.
Objective. To determine the spatial distribution of acute lymphoid leukemia in children from Villa Clara, between 2000 and 2019.
Methods: A population-based descriptive epidemiological study was conducted. Data were obtained from the Population Registry and the National Cancer Registry. The Kulldorff technique was applied through the SaTScan Program, with the option of purely spatial retrospective analysis.
Results: The average anual incidence rate was 2.1 per 100,000. In children from 0 to 4 years old, and of these, those from the coastal area had rate of 4.8 and 8.1, respectively, the latter 2.36 times higher than those of the non-costal area. In children from 0 to 4 years old, the clusters included five of the six coastal municipalities; the most significant in Corralillo and Quemado de Güines, had a rate of 14,6 por 100000. Conjetures were made regarding the posible etiology.
Conclusions: The risk of getting sick is higher in children from the coastal area of the province; this pattern is observed with marked clarity in the population aged 0 to 4 years old. A natural or anthropogenic factor, favored by existing conditions in that geographical area, in interaction with individual biological characteristics, typical of the first years of life, could be present in the etiology of the disease.
