Abstract

Introduction: The notion that a malnourished patient is immunocompromised has ceased to be a slogan and has become a reality. The presence of malnutrition negatively affects the evolution of oncohematological patients. Currently, worldwide emphasis is on providing adequate nutrition as early as possible. Nutritional alterations are not yet recognized worldwide as an important complication of the primary disease, leading to their underestimation and poor treatment. Therefore, studying and understanding these disorders are necessary to improve survival.

Objectives: To describe the impact of nutritional status in patients with malignant hematological diseases.

Methods: A bibliographic-documentary study was conducted on malnutrition in oncohematological patients. Articles from the last 5 years were consulted from the SciELO and PubMed databases. The descriptors MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) and DeCS (DeCS) were used, such as cancer and malnutrition.

Conclusions: Early diagnosis and management of nutritional status in patients with malignant hematological diseases positively influence clinical course, quality of life, and overall survival.
