Abstract

Introduction: Nursing, as the art of caring, requires the systematic evaluation of the competencies required for each job position; that is, the continuous and comprehensive training of its professionals.

Objectives: To validate the specific competencies in the hematology specialty of registered nurses for the care of people with hematological diseases.

Methods: An innovation and development research project was conducted, consisting of a descriptive, longitudinal, and observational study at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology between September 2021 and September 2023. The study included all registered nurses working at the institution. To validate the previously identified competencies, an expert group and committee were formed, and the opinions of registered nurses were also considered through a survey.

Results: The 13 identified competencies were validated. Seven learning needs were identified among the registered nurses, along with six fundamental deficiencies, and the main causes of these deficiencies were determined. A plan was developed outlining different professional development modalities based on the identified learning needs.

Conclusions: The validation of specific competencies in hematology improved the disposition toward competency assessment among these professionals.
