Inborn errors of immunity due to antibody deficiencies in Pinar del Río

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Inborn errors of immunity, previously known as primary immunodeficiencies, are a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders with defects in one or more components of the immune system.

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics and pattern of inheritance of cases with antibody deficiency in patients from Pinar del Río.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted, including 45 patients with antibody deficiency diagnosed and treated in the Immunology Department of the "Pepe Portilla" Pediatric Hospital in Pinar del Río between 1994 and 2022.

Results: 38 patients with selective IgA deficiency, 4 with common variable immunodeficiency, and 3 with agammaglobulinemia were presented. Fifty-eight percent of cases were male. The pattern of inheritance was identified in cases with agammaglobulinemia. Allergic manifestations were observed in 84% of patients, with a history of infectious diseases in all cases, with a clear predominance of bacterial and viral infections, followed by autoimmune manifestations observed in 71% of cases.

Conclusions: Infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders were complications in these patients. Warning signs were observed in severe antibody deficiencies. The pattern of inheritance varies according to the etiology of the defect, with sporadic cases predominating.
