Abstract

Immunodeficiencies constitute a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by partial or total dysfunction of the immune system, leading to increased susceptibility to infections, autoimmune diseases, lymphoproliferative disorders, and neoplasms. In general, these diseases can be divided into two groups: primary immunodeficiencies and secondary (acquired) immunodeficiencies. Today, the world is redefining primary immunodeficiencies as inborn errors of immunity. Early diagnosis is essential for a good prognosis and quality of life for these patients. The Institute of Hematology and Immunology (IHI), the leading center for these specialties in Cuba, has been developing several lines of research for over 20 years to ensure accurate diagnosis, appropriate management, and effective treatment for these immunological disorders. In the context of the IHI's 60th anniversary, we have decided to examine this topic, as it is one of the institution's main lines of research.
