Abstract

Background: Blood donation is a safe procedure, not including strong complications. However, occasionally blood donors can develop adverse reactions affecting the donor blood habitually. Thus, we can study the most frequent reactions and risk factors for early prevention.

Objective: To characterize the population that presented adverse reactions associated with voluntary blood donation in the community of Huila during the years 2019-2020.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study. The sample consisted of blood donors who presented any adverse reaction during the extra and intramural days in 2019 and 2020 at the blood bank of a hospital in southern Colombia. A descriptive and bivariate analysis was performed.

Results: it was found that donors with adverse reactions had an average age of 28 years, a weight of 71.1 kg, hemoglobin of 15g/dL. Most were first-time donors (61.1%) and were women (56.1%). The main reaction was vasovagal (97.5%), of mild severity (85.2%) (p=0.043), immediate (98.8%) and in an extramural (out-of-hospital) environment (80.3%) (p=0.015). The most frequent symptoms were pallor (83.2%) (p=0.008), weakness (47.1%), sweating (46.3%) and drowsiness (45.5%). Vital signs showed variability before, during and 15 minutes after donation.

Conclusion: the population with adverse reactions during blood donation was mainly young, with no apparent risks. Other factors that may affect this outcome should be considered, such as psychological aspects related to anxiety, stress or fear, as well as cultural and environmental aspects.
